The Order first came to Milwaukee in 1921, when Father Michael Mueller, a Camillian, came to the United States from Germany.  In 1923, the first Camillian Hospital opened on the south side of Milwaukee.  In 1925, seven acres of land were purchased in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The Camillians opened St. Camillus Hospital in 1932 in Wauwatosa.

On April 12th, 1946 the Commissariate is raised to the status of a religious province and is known as the North American Province of the Order of St. Camillus.  In the 1960’s, the original hospital was added onto several times and was changed to a nursing home to begin servicing the long-term care market.  In 1968 the Community House for priests and brothers transitioned into an Assisted Living Community.

Camillus Court, our first Memory Care residence opened on campus. In 1986, the campus expanded further with the opening of 200 Independent Living apartment homes. In 1989, groundbreaking took place on a new 188 bed Health Center. Phase 2 of the Independent Living residence was completed in 1991 with the addition of a chapel and 97 more apartments. In the early 1990’s, Assisted Living opened with 69 apartments and the Jesuit Community began leasing space on our campus.

In 2004, ground was broken for 75 new Assisted Living apartments.  In 2009, St. Camillus Home Hospice was established. In 2010, USA Camillians became a delegation of the General Consulta in Rome, and were incorporated into the Camillian Province of Brazil. In 2016, construction began to the North Residence (72 Assisted Living apartments, 48 Memory Care apartments, 50 Jesuit apartments, and a Camillian Community House). It was completed and opened in 2018.

Construction began on the East Residence Independent Living expansion in 2019 to include 168 additional apartment homes. 2021 was the Centennial Celebration of the Camillians in the USA was celebrated. In March 2022, the East Residence opened and completed the latest expansion on the St. Camillus campus. In 2023, West Residence renovations were completed, the Outpatient Therapy Clinic opened and the in-house IPW Medical Clinic opened to service both residents and staff.
