Radar speed signs and improved pedestrian crosswalk at St. Camillus

In response to the number of car accidents involving pedestrians around the St. Camillus property, one that resulted in the death of a Jesuit priest this past February, a coalition meeting was held to discuss safety measures for pedestrians. Leaders from the St. Camillus Jesuit Community, St. Camillus Life Plan Community and the Order of St. Camillus Foundation met with Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride and Dave Simpson, Director of Public Works for the City of Wauwatosa.

The result was two flashing, radar feedback signs installed on Wisconsin Avenue to make drivers aware of their speed. The sign for the eastbound traffic is located at 103rd Street near Wisconsin Park. The westbound traffic sign is located at 99th Street. The pedestrian crosswalk near the Jesuit Community was also reconstructed. Curb bump outs were added to shorten the crosswalk distance and discourage drivers from passing on the sides. Flashing lights, bright yellow paint and striping increases the crosswalk visibility. The project was funded by all members of the coalition as well as by a donation from an anonymous St. Camillus resident.

“Mayor McBride and Mr. Simpson responded quickly when the needs for pedestrian safety were brought to their attention,” said Fr. George Winzenburg, who heads the Jesuit Community. “The improvements will benefit not only the Jesuits and the residents at St. Camillus. They will increase safety for the children and adults who visit the Zoo and use the baseball fields in Wisconsin Avenue Park.”

“We are thrilled that this partnership with the City of Wauwatosa will not only keep members of our community safer but will benefit the residents in the surrounding neighborhoods and the Wauwatosa community as well.”  Shannon Angell, St. Camillus President and CEO
